Severance Calculator

Calculate your severance or end-of-service payment — currently supports Saudi Arabia and Spain.

Enter your values to calculate your result.

This calculator supports Saudi Arabia and Spain — select your region above. For Saudi Arabia: this estimates the standard end-of-service award under Labor Law Articles 84-85 for a typical private-sector employee, reflecting the Labor Law amendments in force since 18 February 2025. It doesn't account for unpaid leave deductions, disciplinary dismissal (Article 80, which can forfeit the award entirely), GOSI-covered employment nuances, or other contract-specific terms. For Spain: this calculator covers employment contracts that began on or after 12 February 2012 only. Contracts predating this date use a different, blended transitional formula (Disposición transitoria quinta, Ley 3/2012) that this calculator does not implement. Partial years are prorated by completed months (truncated, not rounded). Monthly salary is assumed to already include prorated extra payments (pagas extra). Despido nulo and baja voluntaria show no day-rate figure because neither is a severance calculation — see the FAQ. This is an estimate for informational purposes only, not legal advice — consult HR or a labor law professional for your specific situation.

Formula

Saudi Arabia: Full gratuity = 0.5 x wage x min(years, 5) + 1 x wage x max(years - 5, 0), reduced under Article 85 for a fixed-term-contract resignation (1/3 for 2-5 years, 2/3 for 5-10 years, none under 2 years, full at 10+ years). Spain: Despido improcedente/Art. 50 = 33 days x years, capped at 24 months' salary. Despido objetivo/colectivo = 20 days x years, capped at 12 months' salary. Fin de contrato temporal (standard) = 12 days x years, uncapped. Despido procedente pays nothing; despido nulo and baja voluntaria aren't day-rate calculations.

For Saudi Arabia: Labor Law Article 84 sets the base formula — half a month's wage for each of the first five years of service, and a full month's wage for each year after that, based on your last wage. Article 85 reduces this award for a resignation, but only from a fixed-term contract, unless you've completed 10 or more years. Under the Labor Law amendments in force since 18 February 2025, ending an unlimited (indefinite) contract by giving notice is legally a termination, not a resignation, so it isn't subject to this reduction. For Spain: each termination category under the Estatuto de los Trabajadores (ET) has its own formula. Despido improcedente (Art. 56.1 ET) and Art. 50 resolución both pay 33 days of salary per year of service, capped at 24 monthly salaries. Despido objetivo (Art. 53.1.b ET) and despido colectivo (Art. 51.4 ET) both pay 20 days per year, capped at 12 monthly salaries. Fin de contrato temporal (Art. 49.1.c ET) pays 12 days per year with no statutory cap, but excludes contratos formativos and interinidad/sustitución contracts entirely. Partial years are prorated by completed months only. Despido procedente pays nothing. Despido nulo and baja voluntaria aren't severance formulas at all — see the FAQ for why.

Example

Saudi Arabia: an employee earning 10,000 SAR/month on a fixed-term contract who resigns after 7 years of service has a full gratuity of 45,000 SAR (5 x 0.5 x 10,000 + 2 x 10,000), reduced to two-thirds for resigning between 5-10 years: 30,000 SAR. Spain: an employee earning 2,000 EUR/month, employed from 1 June 2019 to 1 June 2025 (exactly 6 years), dismissed by despido improcedente: daily wage = 2,000 x 12 / 365 = 65.75 EUR. Days accrued = 33 x 6 = 198. Amount = 65.75 x 198 = 13,019.18 EUR, well under the 24-month cap (48,000 EUR).

Frequently Asked Questions

Why is my Saudi gratuity reduced?

If you resign from a fixed-term contract with less than 10 years of service, Saudi Labor Law Article 85 reduces your award: no gratuity under 2 years, one-third for 2-5 years, and two-thirds for 5-10 years. Being terminated by your employer, reaching the end of a fixed contract, retiring (at the statutory retirement age or voluntarily/early), or resigning from an unlimited contract doesn't reduce it — all of those receive the full 100% gratuity.

Why does my Saudi contract type matter?

Since the Saudi Labor Law amendments in force since 18 February 2025, the law's statutory definition of "resignation" applies only to ending a fixed-term contract. Ending an unlimited (indefinite) contract by giving notice is legally classified as a termination with notice under Article 75 instead — so it receives the full gratuity, not Article 85's reduced tiers.

What wage is used in the Saudi calculation?

Your last basic wage (not including allowances like housing or transportation, per common practice under Article 84's wage basis).

Why does Despido Nulo (Spain) show "N/A — see note" instead of an amount?

A dismissal ruled null (despido nulo) — typically for discrimination or a violation of fundamental rights — isn't a severance calculation at all. Spanish law requires immediate reinstatement plus full back pay for wages lost since the dismissal (salarios de tramitación), which the employer cannot substitute with a payment. This is often worth more than any severance formula below it, not less — consult a labor lawyer for this scenario.

Why is Baja Voluntaria (resignation, Spain) always 0 EUR?

Resigning (Art. 49.1.d ET) carries no statutory severance under Spanish law — this is genuinely correct, not a limitation of this calculator. The only legal obligation is a notice period (preaviso), typically around 15 days by custom but not fixed in the ET itself; check your convenio colectivo (collective agreement) for the exact period that applies to you.

Why does the Spain calculation only cover contracts from 2012 onward?

For contracts formalized before 12 February 2012, the calculation blends two different formulas — 45 days/year for service before that date (capped at 42 monthly salaries) and 33 days/year afterward — with a genuinely disputed cap interaction that courts have had to clarify case by case. This calculator doesn't model that blended formula; if your contract predates 12 February 2012, consult a labor law professional.

How is the daily wage calculated for Spain?

Gross monthly salary x 12, divided by 365 — the standard "salario diario regulador" wage basis. This calculator assumes your entered monthly salary already includes prorated extra payments (pagas extra); if you're only entering base salary, your real figure will be somewhat higher.

Is a labor reform changing Spain's amounts?

As of 2026, there is ongoing discussion in Spain and at the EU level about reforming unfair-dismissal compensation, partly driven by European Social Charter pressure. No change to the formulas used in this calculator has been enacted as law — this calculator reflects current, unchanged law.
