Download / Upload Time Calculator

Estimate how long a file will take to download or upload at a given speed.

Enter your values to calculate your result.

This assumes the full advertised speed with no overhead. Real-world transfers are usually slower due to network congestion, other devices sharing the connection, and server-side limits.

Formula

Time = File Size (bits) / Speed (bits per second)

File sizes are usually shown in bytes-based units (MB, GB), while connection speeds are usually advertised in bits-based units (Mbps) — since there are 8 bits in a byte, this converts both to a common unit before dividing.

Example

A 5 GB file on a 100 Mbps connection takes about 400 seconds (a bit under 7 minutes) at full speed.

Frequently Asked Questions

Does this work for uploads too?

Yes — the math is the same either way. Just enter your upload speed instead of your download speed.

Why is my actual download slower than this estimate?

Real-world speeds are typically lower than the advertised plan speed due to network overhead, congestion, other devices on the connection, and limits on the server you're downloading from.
