Formula

Net Area = (Length × Height) − Excluded Area Liters Needed = (Net Area × Coats) ÷ Coverage Rate Cans Needed = ⌈Liters Needed ÷ Can Size⌉

The wall's area, minus any doors or windows you won't paint, is multiplied by the number of coats you plan to apply, then divided by your paint's coverage rate (how many square meters one liter covers — check your paint can's label, as this varies by product; roughly 8-10 m² per liter is typical).

Example

A 5m × 2.5m wall (12.5 m²) with 2 m² excluded for a door, painted with 2 coats at 10 m²/liter coverage, needs (12.5 − 2) × 2 ÷ 10 = 2.1 liters, or 1 can of 4L paint.

Frequently Asked Questions

Where do I find my paint's coverage rate?

Check the label on your paint can — manufacturers specify coverage (often as m²/liter or sq ft/gallon) for their specific product, since it varies by paint type, surface texture, and brand.

Why does the number of coats matter so much?

Each additional coat requires the same amount of paint as the first — two coats simply doubles the paint needed for the same wall area.
