This is a material estimate — always buy from the same batch/dye lot when possible, and check with your supplier about their own recommended waste allowance for your specific tile and room shape.

Formula

Room Area = Length × Width Tile Area = Tile Length × Tile Width Tiles Needed = ⌈(Room Area ÷ Tile Area) × (1 + Waste %)⌉

The room's floor area is divided by a single tile's area to get the base tile count, then increased by a waste allowance (typically 10%, covering cuts, breakage, and pattern matching) and rounded up to a whole tile. Dividing by how many tiles come per box, rounded up, gives the number of boxes to buy.

Example

A 4m × 3m room (12 m²) tiled with 60cm × 60cm tiles (0.36 m² each) needs 12 ÷ 0.36 ≈ 33.3 base tiles, or 37 tiles with a 10% waste allowance — 10 boxes if each box holds 4 tiles.

Frequently Asked Questions

Why add a waste allowance?

Cutting tiles to fit around edges, corners, and fixtures always produces some unusable offcuts, and a few tiles may break during handling or installation. A 10% allowance is a common starting point — larger or more complex rooms, or diagonal patterns, may need more.
